Oceania Corporate Governance Conference - Brisbane 2023

Date: Saturday, July 1, 2023

Location: Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane

Organizers: Dr. Pieter-Jan Bezemer (ECU); Prof Gavin Nicholson (QUT); AsProf Bo Qin (UMelb)

The 2023 Corporate Governance Paper Development Workshop (PDW), held in Brisbane, provided a platform for both emerging and established scholars to engage and refine their research for potential publication in Corporate Governance: An International Review. The event was strategically scheduled to precede the AFAANZ conference (Australian Accounting Academics conference) and aimed to support scholars in developing draft papers.

The session was specifically tailored to be relatively small (20-25 participants) and to deliver value to the participants who attended via significant interaction with senior scholars. There were 13 participants who presented their work in four roundtables. Each roundtable had 2 senior scholars providing targeted feedback.

The day commenced with insights from Professor Abe de Jong of Monash University, followed by an engaging session with CGIR editors (Till and Kostas) discussing the journal’s mission and review process. Morning tea provided an opportunity for informal networking before the second keynote by Professor Flora Kuang from the University of Melbourne.

After lunch, the main part of the PDW kicked off with paper development sessions. Participants received tailored feedback aimed at improving their research for better chances of acceptance in corporate governance journals. Professor Niamh Brennan from UCD delivered the third keynote, enriching attendees with her insights on effective research strategies in corporate governance.

The conference wrapped up with a session that outlined future collaboration opportunities, followed by an informal dinner that encouraged further discussion networking.

This gathering not only emphasised scholarly development but also highlighted the community aspect of the corporate governance research field, making the 2023 PDW a significant success in nurturing governance scholarship.
